Imagine that you are 5 years old. Your legs are bent and bowed. You walk but not that well. You can see other kids running, playing soccer (futbol) but you can't really play. There isn't anyone to help you, no Dr. that can fix your legs. One day your mom takes you on a trip to the port, and you see a huge white ship floating on the waves. Inside you have to talk to a nurse, but you don't actually know what a nurse is since you've never been to a hospital. You can't understand what people are saying since they don't speak the same language and the skin color is different so all in all it is very scary.
Today, I met this little boy. I went to the admissions tent to draw his labs and he was so scared. Of course he was crying and yelling, and swinging his arms, but then it was over and he just looked at me. Obviously I was a horrible mean person to do something like that and even the sparkle dragon sticker wasn't enough to get a smile. He did let me put it on his hand though. After I was done I took the blood and went to the lab to run the tests. That is also what I learned today. How to run the machines to check blood for malaria, HIV,Sickle Cell, and blood counts. I watched the HIV test for the entire 15 minutes praying that it was negative so the little boy could have his surgery. If you are positive your body rejects the metal rods that he needs to repair his legs. The little boy doesn't know me except to know I'm mean, and I don't think he realizes that he is stuck with me since he is in my heart and I will be following him very closely. Tomorrow the scared little boy will have surgery, and I will be in the ward after to hug his mama and see how he is doing. This is why I'm in Africa!
